Land Unit in Thailand

Thailand has a unique system of measurement that combines both the metric system and its own traditional system of land measurement.

Thailand officially uses the metric system for weights and measurements, having adopted it on December 17, 1923. However, before metrication, the traditional system of measurement used in Thailand employed anthropic units, some of which are still in use today, albeit standardized to SI/metric measurements. For example, the Thai currency, the Baht, was originally used as a way to weigh gold when trading. The traditional Thai measurement system had its own unique way of measuring mass, area, distance, and length. Some traditional measurements are still used today, particularly for measuring land area. In addition to the metric system, Thailand has its own traditional land measurement system based on rai, Ngan, and Wah. These units are still in use today, especially for measuring land area.

In Thailand, the land measurement units are as follows:

1 Rai = 4 Ngan = 400 Square Wah = 1,600 square meters

1 Ngan = 100 Square Wah = 400 square meters

1 Square Wah = 4 square meters

Living Space Unit

Square meter units can be found by calculating the area of a room in a condo. Or use to measure living space in the house, such as land using square meters But the usable area will be used in square meters and count every floor in the house. There is also a “square foot” unit.

1 square foot = 929.03 square centimeters (approximately)

1 square meter = 10,000 square centimeters = 10.76 square feet (approximately)

1 square kilometer = 1,000,000 square meters = 625 rai

The Unit Converion guidelines for Thai to Metric Units.

  • To convert from wa to meters, multiply the wa unit by 2.

  • To convert from square wa to square meters, multiply square wa units by 4.
  • To convert from work to square meters, multiply work units by 400 (100 * 4)
  • To convert from rai to square meters, multiply the rai unit by 1600.
